Cause
: Epstein Barr Virus (EBV) (Herpesvirus)
Transmission
: Direct contact (saliva)
Symptoms
: Asymptomatic or fever, fatigue, pharyngitis, swollen lymph nodes
Pathogenesis
: EBV infects B-cells, stimulating their uncontrolled growth. Spleen enlarges, fatigue and fever ensue. T-suppressor cells multiply to control B-cells. Lymph nodes swell
Complications
: EBV becomes latent in B-cells. Surviving B-cells may lead to
Burkitt's lymphoma
