Cancer

Introduction. 

While most cancers are due to environmental and genetic (hereditary) causes, several types of cancer are caused by viruses. Such viruses are called oncogenic viruses and include Epstein Barr Virus, HTLV-1, and Hepatitis B and C Viruses.

  1. Epstein Barr Virus: Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma
  2. Hepatitis B virus: Liver cancer
  3. Hepatitis C virus: Liver cancer
  4. Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV8): Kaposi's sarcoma (AIDS - immunocompromised people)
  5. HPV 16 & 18: cervical carcinoma
  6. HTLV-1: Adult T-cell lymphoma (esp. AIDS)
