Desulfovibrio are Gram - negative anaerobic straight or curved rods. They are chemoheterotrophs which reduce sulfur to H2S gas during anaerobic respiration. Hydrogen sulfide produced by these anaerobes often precipitates in iron-rich waters or soils, causing a black color (Desulfovibrio are responsible for the color of the Black Sea). These are very common in waterlogged soils and mud flats.
