Trachoma

Introduction.

Trachoma is a chronic eye infection that causes scarring of the conjunctivae, corneal abrasion and scarring, and possible blindness. It is caused by serotypes A, B and C of Chlamydia trachomatis. Inflammation of the conjunctivae leads to the inward-turning of eyelids and eyelashes to rub against the cornea. Acute conjunctivitis (adult and neonatal) is caused by serotypes A, B, and D - K, involves pus-filled discharge and can lead to keratitis.
