Symptoms: Asymptomatic or fever, fatigue, pharyngitis, swollen
lymph nodes
Pathogenesis: EBV infects B-cells via CD21 (C3d receptor), stimulating their uncontrolled
growth. Spleen enlarges, fatigue and fever ensue. Heterophile antibody
produced. T-suppressor cells
multiply to control B-cells. Lymph nodes swell
Complications: EBV becomes latent in B-cells. Surviving B-cells may
lead to Burkitt's lymphoma. Other complications
include Hodgkin's disease and nasopharyngeal cancer.
