Erysipeloid

Summary

• Cause: Erysipelothrix  rhusiopathiae
• Microscopy: Gram-positive rods (thin, long filaments)
• Symptoms: Purplish inflammatory lesion, commonly on hands
• Transmission: handling of infected animals (butchers, fish handlers, farmers)
• Pathogenesis: Capsule resists phagocytosis. Inflammation (mediated by hyaluronidase?)
• Treatment: Penicillin, Clindamycin
