Carrión Disease (Bartonellosis)

Introduction.

Infections by Bartonella bacteria cause several fever-like illnesses in humans, including Oroya fever, Trench fever and  Cat-scratch disease. Carrión Disease is caused by Bartonella bacilliformis. In the acute form, called Oroya fever , infections by B. bacilliformis produce a fever and severe anemia as the bacteria multiply inside erythrocytes. It is transmitted by the sandfly from its animal reservoir (zoonotic). A chronic stage of Bartonellosis called verruga leads to formation of skin nodules which may last for years.
