Tinea nigra

Introduction. 

Tinea nigra is a superficial skin infection caused by a filamentous fungus, Hortaea wernickii. The infection occurs through trauma (cuts, puncture wounds) and is not contagious.

• Microscopy: Filamentous branched septate fungus
• Symptoms: Hyperpigmented irregular lesion with defined edges
• Transmission: Trauma
• Complications: none
• Treatment: topical azoles or terbinafine
