Piedra (black or white)

Introduction. 

Piedra is a superficial fungal infection of hair. Black piedra is caused by the mold-like fungus Piedraia hortae and affects primarily the scalp hair, while White Piedra is caused by the yeast-like fungus Trichophyton spp. and affects axillary and groin hair.

• Cause: Trichophyton spp (white) and Piedraia hortae (black)
• Microscopy: Yeasts (white); mold-like (black)
• Symptoms: Superficial discoloration/swelling of hair shaft
• Transmission: Direct contact (poor hygiene)
• Complications: none
• Treatment: topical azoles (white); good hygiene, washing, shaving
