Coccidiomycosis

Introduction.

Coccidiomycosis, also known as San Joaquin Valley Fever, is a systemic fungal infection caused by Coccioides immitis. Coccidioides are commonly found in dry, arid soils in the Americas and can be stirred up in dust storms. Although most people are asymptomatic, some experience respiratory symptoms such as cough, fever, and chest pain. A progressive systemic infection in immunocompromised hosts (AIDS) can lead to skin lesions and meningitis.
