Clostridia are regular Gram - positive endosporing rods. They are obligate anaerobes. Their metabolism is chemoheterotrophic, and they can often be found in soils. Pathogenic strains include C. botulinum (botulism), C. tetani (tetanus) , C. difficile (antibiotic-induced colitis) and C. perfringens (gas gangrene).
