Vibrio is a Gram-negative curved bacterium that is closely related to the Enterobacteria. It includes several serious pathogens, including the strain that causes cholera (V. cholerae). A toxin produced by these bacteria (Cholera Toxin) activates G-proteins in the host's intestinal epithelium, causing these cells to secrete massive amounts of water. The resulting diarrhea causes dehydration. Some strains of Vibrio are luminescent (V. fischeri).
